5 Benefits of Working on a Holiday: A Reflection on January 2nd

Confused Travolta

After eating, drinking, watching sports and seeing family for what seemed like a month over the holidays, I headed into work early Monday morning on January 2nd.

I quickly realized it was actually a holiday for most people as I drove with about one third of the usual amount of traffic.

That’s not the only good thing about working when hardly anyone else is…

5 Benefits of Working When Nearly Everyone Else Isn’t:

  1. It’s an easier drive. Traffic was light and it seemed like everyone was in a happier state because of it. Actually saw some other drivers smiling which startled me at first…but it definitely changes one’s mood to have a clear path where they normally don’t.
  2. It’s quiet in the office. You have time to think. You might even read instead of just scanning because you don’t feel rushed from the activity around you.
  3. There aren’t any “Fake Emergencies” or  “Not Really Crises of the Day.” Don’t underestimate the significance of this because It makes the day more productive and less stressful.
  4. You have time to focus on your unique ability, whether you want to or not. I had no choice but to dig into creative, strategic solutions. No chance of putting off that challenging but enjoyable  work to instead focus on tactical implementation tasks.
  5. Clients who are working are also able to think, focus, read and talk. I had multiple relaxed and productive client conversations.
Now I remember why I worked some Black Fridays when I was in Corporate America because you get shit done and do what you’re good at then have a quick, easy drive home.

Happy New Year. Hope your 2023 is UnBULLievable.
